Urban Water Management Plan
The City of Turlock is in the process of preparing its 2010-2011 Urban Water Management Plan, which is designed to assess the reliability of the City’s water sources, support to our long-term resource planning,
and ensure adequate water supplies are available to meet existing and future water demands.
The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) requires water suppliers to prepare and submit an Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP) every five years as part of the Urban Water Management Planning Act. Typically, UWMPs are due December 31 of years ending in 0 and 5. However, a six-month extension has been granted this time to allow suppliers to comply with new 2009 legislation [Senate Bill X7-7], which has additional requirements.
The UWMP includes a general discussion of Turlock’s history, along with an overview of its demographics, water supply sources, water demand, reliability and water shortage contingency planning,
and demand-side management (conservation) measures. The City encourages the community to participate in all its water management planning efforts. There will be notices to keep the public informed about the update process and how they can give their input. Also, the draft plan will be placed on the City's website for public review and comment.
Please be sure to visit this webpage for updates to the plan and adoption timeline.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND AND RESOURCES
All of Turlock's water comes from deep water wells. In periods of drought, extra measures are implemented to ensure that an adequate supply of water is available even as water table levels may drop. New wells have been installed over the past several years that have made system-wide pressures higher and more stable. All wells are monitored through the Municipal Services' telemetry system. This allows for real time monitoring of the system and an ability to respond more quickly and effectively to any problems.
The City of Turlock has a year round water conservation program, based on an odd/even watering schedule. Citizens are encouraged to conserve water whenever possible, and to realize there is never an excuse to waste our precious resource. Utilities staff respond to complaints regarding over watering. Seasonally staff patrols all neighborhoods in Turlock to educate consumers about water conservation.
The City of Turlock offers residents and businesses a number of free services designed to assist with water conservation efforts, such as:
- Free sprinkler timer set-up
- Residential Water Audit Program
- Free water saving fixtures and devices
- Suggestions and ideas for conserving water (website and brochures)
- School and Youth Educational Programs
WHAT CAN I DO TO SAVE WATER?
Some of the simplest things the average household can do to reduce water use include: efficient landscape watering, complying with the City’s adopted landscape watering schedule, adding aerators to faucets, installing low flow shower heads, and fixing leaky toilets and faucets.
