People, Programs, and Partnerships
Recreation and Arts programs are essential to quality living. Research has proven that recreation activities:
- reduces crime,
- provides job opportunities and training for local teens
- prevents illnesses
- fights obesity
- encourages positive social interactions
The City of Turlock Recreation Division provides a variety of excellent, safe, and supervised recreational, social, sport and educational programs for youth of all ages.
Your donation of $20.00 or more will continue the Turlock tradition of providing motivating and exciting programs that will deter youth from participating in Gangs, and juvenile crime. Positive activities also engages youth in activities which enhances what is learned in school, while at the same time fighting obesity and illnesses.
Each $20.00 donation will keep one child supervised and engaged in a positive activity for 8 hours.
Programs offered in 2008 successfully engaged youth in the following ways:
Provided part-time employment for 200 young adults (average age 19 years old) and engaged over 290 teen volunteers. Youth who work in the community, spend in the community thus, helping with economic development. 954 youth were engaged in after school activities, which support better school test scores, deters negative behavior and fights obesity. Sporting opportunities were improved by supplying scholarships to over 310 at-risk youth, in addition another 6,197 youth participated in sports clinics, leagues, tournaments and skill building workshops.
3,200 teens participated in social activities which supported self development, skill building and community relations. Constructive recreation programs and activities help solve the “I’ve got nothing to do” problem. 1,933 youth participated in aquatic lessons and swim programs. Providing safe and supervised places to swim helps prevent drowning. 1,694 residents participated in enrichment activities such as yoga, tennis, theatre, and self-defense. These activities increase self-esteem, provides for cultural understanding and promotes positive self-expression and assists with depression. Approximately 16,000 community members participated in community events such as parades, festivals, and concerts. Family oriented events promote cultural unity and acceptance and create family memories and traditions.
