Home Occupation Permit

Who needs a Home Occupation Permit?

Any person who conducts business using their home as their base of business and lives within the city limits must have a Home Occupation Permit. Typical Home Occupations include contractors, consultants, accountants, direct sales (e.g. Avon, Pampered Chef, candles and the like), website designers, computer repair, lawn maintenance, handyman or similar enterprises.

How much does the permit cost?

The filing fee is $65.00, but may be more if Police Department clearance is required.

How long is the permit valid?

There is a one-time filing fee for a Home Occupation Permit and the permit is valid as long as the business exists at the location listed on the permit.

Do I need my landlord's approval?

If you rent your home, or apartment your landlord or property manager must sign the permit application to allow you to conduct a commercial enterprise from the residence.

How long does it take the City to approve my permit?

Home Occupation Permits are approved routinely "over the counter", meaning they are approved and issued when you bring in the completed application.

Please contact the Planning Division at (209) 668-5640 if you have more questions about starting a home based business.
